Winfield’s defining chimney problem is not a blocked flue — it is house air pressure. Mid-century houses here have shorter, squatter chimneys that draft less strongly to begin with, and many have since had new windows and added insulation. When the house is the problem, not the chimney
A fire needs two things to draw properly: a clear flue, and air. Most people assume a smoking fireplace means the first one is blocked. In Winfield it is very often the second.
A fire pulls a substantial volume of air out of the room and sends it up the flue, and that air has to be replaced from somewhere. In an older, draughtier house it comes in around windows, doors and floorboards without anyone noticing. Seal that house properly — new windows, added insulation, weatherstripping — and there is nowhere for the replacement air to come from. The draft weakens and smoke takes the easiest available exit, which is your living room.
The test is simple. Crack a window near the fireplace by a couple of inches and light the fire. If the smoking stops or improves markedly, it is an air supply problem rather than a blockage. If nothing changes, the flue itself needs looking at.
Two other clues point at pressure: if it smokes only when the furnace, a bathroom extractor, a kitchen hood or the dryer is running, those appliances are competing for the same air. And if the problem started after energy-efficiency work rather than gradually, that timing is telling you something.
Mid-century chimneys and mature trees
Post-war and mid-century houses tend to have shorter, squatter chimneys than Victorian property, often serving both a fireplace and the furnace from one stack. A shorter flue drafts less strongly, which is what makes the tight-house problem bite harder here.
The furnace flue in these stacks is very often the one nobody has ever thought about, and the one most likely to have been left oversized when the furnace was replaced. It is worth putting a camera up both.

Why does my fireplace smoke when I open the doors?
Two common causes: the flue is restricted by buildup, or the house is sealed tightly enough that the fire cannot draw enough replacement air. Mid-century Winfield houses with newer windows hit the second one often.
