Campton Hills is a young village on old ground — incorporated in 2007, but covering countryside that has been farmed and lived on for well over a century. The housing reflects that split: substantial modern homes on multi-acre lots alongside genuinely old farmhouses and the hamlet of LaFox.
What the two have in common is exposure. There is very little here to break the wind. A chimney on a large open lot takes weather from every direction and, on the bigger houses, it is often a tall stack on a steep roof. Tall and steep means two things: more surface area collecting water, and a job that needs proper roof access rather than a ladder and optimism.
Tall flues also draft hard, which is generally good, but combined with real wood burning it means these systems move a lot of material. Buildup accumulates faster than in a suburban fireplace lit at Christmas.
Old farmhouses need old-fashioned mortar
The genuinely old property out here brings the full set of historic masonry problems. Soft lime mortar that a modern hard portland mix will damage rather than repair. Flues built for coal or wood stoves and later adapted for oil and then gas. Chimneys that were unlined from the day they were built, because lining was not standard practice.
None of that is a reason to panic, and we are not going to tell you a two-hundred-year-old chimney needs replacing. But it is a reason to have someone look properly with a camera before you light a fire in a house you have just bought, and a reason to insist that whoever points the masonry uses a mortar compatible with what is already there. What proper access actually means
We mention roof access because it is the practical difference between a job done properly and a job done from the firebox and guessed at.
A crown crack, a lifted cap, failed flashing and a rusted chase cover are all things you can only assess from the top. On a tall stack on a steep pitch, that requires equipment and the confidence to move on a roof. If a company quotes you for chimney work without having been on the roof, ask how they assessed it.
