Chimney sweep in South Elgin, IL
A Fox River village north of St. Charles that grew fast. Older riverside streets, a large band of 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, and a lot of gas fireplaces nobody has serviced.

South Elgin has an unusually high proportion of gas fireplaces, and gas is where we find the most neglect — not through carelessness, but because people reasonably assume that no wood means nothing to clean. A gas fireplace produces no creosote, but the burner collects dust, the glass gasket hardens, logs shift out of position and spiders nest in the pilot assembly. The visible warning is soot, and a correctly burning gas appliance should never soot.
Smoke coming into the room, flames or roaring in the flue, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone out and call the fire service first, then call us. We put these calls to the front of the queue.

A village that doubled, then doubled again
South Elgin is one of the faster-growing places in our service area, and the housing shows it. There is an older core along the Fox near the village centre — the same stretch the Fox River Trolley Museum runs its heritage line along — and then a very large amount of housing built from the 1990s onwards spreading west and south.
That second group is where most of our South Elgin work is, and the pattern is consistent. The house is twenty to thirty years old. It has a factory-built fireplace used a handful of times or not at all. Nobody has been on the roof since it was built. The chase cover has rusted, or the cap has gone, and water has been quietly getting in.
People assume a newer house means a newer chimney with nothing wrong. Twenty-five years of Illinois weather is twenty-five years of Illinois weather regardless of what the kitchen looks like.
The gas fireplace blind spot
Gas units do not produce creosote. What they do produce is a slow accumulation of dust on the burner ports that disrupts the flame pattern, a glass gasket that hardens and stops sealing, ceramic logs that shift out of the position they were engineered to sit in, and a pilot assembly that spiders reliably nest in over summer. Any of those can push a unit into incomplete combustion, and incomplete combustion means carbon monoxide.
The visible warning is soot. A correctly burning gas fireplace should not deposit black soot on the glass or the logs. If yours does, stop using it and have it looked at — see gas fireplace service.
The difference from wood matters. A wood fire that vents badly fills the room with smoke, which is obvious and immediate. A gas fireplace venting into a blocked or deteriorated flue produces no smoke and no smell while looking entirely normal. Illinois law requires carbon monoxide alarms within 15 feet of sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances.

Chimney questions from South Elgin
Does a gas fireplace really need annual service?
Yes. It produces no creosote, but the burner collects dust, the glass gasket degrades, logs shift out of position and the vent can block. Those push a unit toward incomplete combustion, which is a carbon monoxide problem.
There is black soot on my gas fireplace glass. Is that normal?
No. A correctly burning gas appliance should not soot. Sooting indicates incomplete combustion. Stop using it and get it checked.
My house is only 25 years old. Surely the chimney is fine?
Twenty-five Illinois winters is a long time for a metal chase cover and a cap. Newer houses here fail from weather and neglect rather than creosote, and the failures are on top where nobody looks.
What is the most common thing you find in South Elgin?
A rusted chase cover on a prefabricated chimney, followed by a missing or loose cap, followed by a gas fireplace that has never had a service.
Do you work on the older riverside streets too?
Yes. That older stock has the usual masonry issues — aged liners, receding mortar joints and thin crowns.
My pilot light keeps going out. Can you fix that?
Usually. It is most often a dirty thermocouple or a partly blocked pilot orifice, and insects nesting in the assembly over summer is a very common cause.
Do I need a cap on a gas flue?
Yes. It is still open to rain and nesting animals, and a blocked gas flue is more dangerous than a blocked wood one because there is no smoke to warn you.
How quickly can you reach South Elgin?
A short run north from Geneva through St. Charles, so usually same or next day.
