Elburn burns wood for real. Out west of Randall Road, wood stoves and inserts outnumber decorative open fireplaces, and higher burn volume means creosote accumulates faster than the annual calendar assumes. Rural property changes the job
Once you get west of Randall Road the housing changes character. Elburn has an older village core, a band of newer development that arrived with the Metra station, and then genuinely rural property beyond that — farmhouses, outbuildings and homes on larger lots.
Rural property brings things we rarely see in Geneva or Wheaton. Wood is a serious heating source rather than a decorative one, which means higher burn volumes and faster creosote buildup. Wood stoves and inserts are far more common than open fireplaces.
Older farmhouses also tend to have chimneys that have been modified over a century: a flue that once served a coal stove, then an oil furnace, now a gas one, with nobody resizing anything along the way. Each of those fuel changes altered what the flue needed to do.
The insert-and-liner problem
An insert is designed to vent through a correctly sized liner running from the appliance all the way to the top of the chimney. What frequently happens instead is that the insert is slid into the existing fireplace opening and vented straight into the large open masonry flue above it.
It looks finished. It lights, it burns, it heats the room. And it is wrong. An insert produces a much smaller volume of exhaust than the open fireplace it replaced, and that exhaust is cooler because the appliance is putting more heat into your room. Put a small volume of relatively cool gas into a large masonry flue and it loses heat fast, slows, and condenses on the walls.
The results are predictable: sluggish draft, smoke rolling out when you open the door, and creosote accumulating far faster than it should. See chimney relining.
Burning volume changes the schedule
The annual sweep is a reasonable default for a household that burns a few evenings a week. If wood is genuinely heating your house through an Elburn winter, the trigger is buildup rather than the calendar, and you can pass an eighth of an inch of creosote well before the season ends.

Exposure is the other factor. A chimney on an open lot with no windbreak takes weather from every direction, and wind-driven rain finds failed flashing far faster than it does on a sheltered street.

Often, yes. Each appliance needs a flue sized for it, and chimneys never resized through those changes are usually oversized for whatever is on them now.
Does an exposed property need more maintenance?
It tends to. No windbreak means wind-driven rain hits from every direction and finds weaknesses in flashing and mortar faster.
What if I burn wood I cut myself?
Fine, provided it is genuinely seasoned — split, stacked off the ground under cover, six months minimum and a year for oak. Green wood is the fastest way to glaze a flue.
