North Aurora divides sharply by build date. The older core near the river behaves like Batavia and Aurora — clay-tile or unlined flues, soft century-old mortar, thin crowns. Everything built since the late 1990s brings factory-built fireboxes and, more pressingly, long dryer vent runs from interior laundry rooms. A packed vent is a genuine fire risk rather than an inconvenience.

Two eras of housing, two problem lists
North Aurora is small enough to be specific about. The older core sits close to the Fox near the original village centre, and the chimneys there behave like the older parts of Batavia and Aurora — clay-tile or unlined flues, mortar that has been through a century of freeze-thaw, and crowns built thin that have been cracking quietly for decades.
Then there is everything from the late 1990s onward, out towards Randall and Orchard Road. That housing brings a completely different list: factory-built fireboxes, prefabricated metal chimneys inside sided chases, and dryer vent runs that leave a laundry room in the middle of the house and travel a long way before reaching an exterior wall.
The dryer vent problem here is real
Those long runs are worth calling out because they are the single most neglected thing we find in newer North Aurora houses.
An older house often has the laundry on an exterior wall with a two-foot duct. A newer floor plan puts it in the middle, which means fifteen to twenty-five feet with two or three elbows. Every extra foot and every bend reduces airflow and gives lint somewhere to catch. As the duct fills, the machine runs hotter and longer, and lint is dry, fibrous and highly combustible.
The reliable early warning is a normal load needing two cycles. People treat that as the machine getting old. It is almost always the vent. See dryer vent cleaning.
What the river adds
Being close to the Fox means more ambient moisture, and moisture is what turns an ordinary Illinois winter into masonry damage. Water soaks into brick and mortar during a thaw, freezes overnight, expands by roughly nine percent, and forces the material apart from inside.
White chalky streaks on a stack — efflorescence — are harmless in themselves but prove water is moving through the masonry. On the riverside streets it shows up earlier than it does further east.

Yes. The usual failure point is the metal chase cover on top — a flat lid that ponds water, rusts through and drips inside the chase where nobody sees it.
Our house is by the river and the brick looks chalky. Is that a problem?
The chalkiness is efflorescence and is cosmetic, but it tells us water is travelling through the masonry. Near the Fox that is common and worth an inspection.
