A dryer vent should be cleaned about once a year, and more often on long runs with several bends or in households with heavy pet shedding. Lint is dry, fibrous and highly combustible, and failure to clean dryer vents is consistently identified by US fire authorities as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. The most reliable early warning is a normal load needing two cycles to dry.

Why lint is a fire risk and not just dirt
Lint is dry, fibrous and highly combustible, and a dryer supplies exactly what it needs to ignite: sustained heat and a steady flow of air. As the duct fills, airflow drops, the machine runs hotter and longer to dry the same load, and that heat has nowhere to go.
This is the household fire risk people most consistently underestimate, because a dryer feels like a benign appliance and the duct behind it is out of sight.
The six signs, in the order they usually appear
Clothes need two cycles. The most reliable early signal. Airflow has dropped.
The dryer or the room gets hot. Heat that should be leaving through the duct is staying indoors.
No airflow at the outside vent. Run the dryer and hold your hand at the exterior hood. Weak or no air means the run is packed.
The outside flap never opens. The damper should lift when the machine runs. One that stays shut, or is matted with lint, is a blocked vent.
A damp or musty laundry room. A dryer moves a lot of moisture. If it is not going outside, it is going into your house.
A burning smell. Stop using it. That is hot lint, and it is the last warning you get.
What actually gets cleaned
The whole run, from the machine connection to the exterior hood, using a rotating brush on flexible rods with a vacuum capturing the debris as it comes loose.
Pulling a handful of lint from behind the dryer is not cleaning the vent, and blowing lint further along the duct just relocates the blockage. If someone quotes you fifteen minutes for a long run, that is what is happening.
We also look at what caused it. Flexible foil or white vinyl accordion duct catches lint in every ridge and should be rigid or semi-rigid metal — vinyl is also combustible. Crushed duct behind a machine pushed too far back against the wall is extremely common. And a missing exterior damper lets birds nest in the hood.
Why newer houses block faster
Older houses often put the laundry on an exterior wall with a two-foot duct run. A lot of the housing built around Geneva since the late 1990s puts the laundry room in the middle of the floor plan, which means fifteen to twenty-five feet of duct with two or three elbows before it reaches outside.
Every extra foot and every bend reduces airflow and gives lint somewhere to catch. If that describes your house, annual cleaning is not over-cautious — it is the correct interval.
Pets change it too. A household with heavy-shedding dogs loads a vent considerably faster than the duct length alone would suggest.
